CHARACTER
Name: Theodore 'Ted' Lasso
Journal:
theodorelasso
Age: 45
Canon: Ted Lasso
Canon point: Post season 2 (in-universe: summer 2021) (canon-updated later)
Abilities: No supernatural ones. He's a normal human. He's excellent at darts, though.
Personality:
TRAITS: Optimistic, supportive, playful, silly, honest, loving, patient, forgiving, curious, insightful, dorky.
IDEALS: Goodness and kindness, helping people be their best selves.
FLAWS: Self-sacrificing, relentless, self-critical, intense, well-meaning.
Ted has always been a friendly and effusive chatterbox, generous and kind. He likes people, and generally believes the best of them. He's neither particularly academic nor ambitiously career-focused, more interested in other things - socializing, sports, music, media/theater, food.. He doesn't care about recognition so much as seeing the results of his effort. He is however hard-working, and he never quits anything he's committed himself to.
The reason for this is because when he was 16, his father committed suicide, while Ted was at home. Angry at his father for giving up, Ted promised himself he would never quit anything, and he also knew that he would never let anyone get by him without knowing that they might be hurting inside. This event shaped so much of who he is as a person. He took the worst experience of his life and shaped it into some of his best qualities.
As a football/soccer coach, he's beloved by his players. He treats everyone with kindness and patience. One of his driving motivations is to help people be the best they can be, which he does with support, encouragement, advice, and occasionally discipline. He's also surprisingly insightful and emotionally intelligent, and even sometimes benevolently manipulative. When he meets someone who is unrepentantly cruel or selfish, he's still polite, but his focus becomes protecting others from harm from this person, often in a subtle way, and by taking advantage of the fact people usually underestimate him.
He's also very playful, theatrical and dorky, loving to make others smile with his antics. For example, as a goodbye present for a coworker, he teaches the team how to perform the dance from NSync's 'Bye Bye Bye'. He loves making gestures of affection and appreciation, whether big or small.
However, his positive attitude and his focus on supporting others means he often neglects himself. He's rarely genuinely vulnerable except with those he totally trusts. He also suffers from anxiety and panic attacks, something he hid until he was forced to confront and deal with it. His separation from his son is taking a big toll him, even if he tries to hide it, and to some extent self-medicate with alcohol.

Alternate memories:
Ted was still born in Kansas, in 1885. He was raised by a loving parents and had a decent basic education. His father was a grocer, and Ted worked in his store for a while, before he started following his own dreams.
Which was theater. Prohibition was actually active already in Kansas when he was born, however it was common for people who wished to drink to simply cross state borders into Missouri, which is what Ted ended up doing with his friends, going to drink and see shows. He fell in love with the joy that entertainment like that could bring. He started getting involved in vaudeville in Kansas City (the Missouri side), usually not as a performer himself (though he does sing), but working himself up to become involved in the creative and management side of things.
Kansas City was a city of vice, and while Ted had little interest in it himself, he was not unfamiliar with the criminal element, albeit usually the more tame aspects of it. He worked for a time at a burlesque show, though he felt the entertainment aspect was often put aside for sexiness, which frustrated him. Still, he preferred the spectacle and showmanship over more somber forms of theater. His own main vice was alcohol, and even after prohibition was imposed in Missouri when Ted was 34, Kansas City remained unaffected, as did Ted's alcohol consumption.
He dated a few people during his 20s, mostly women but also one or two men. Despite being in showbiz where sexual morals were a bit looser, he remained both monogamous and faithful, preferring to know someone before getting involved with them. He absolutely wanted to get married and have a family, though he found it hard to combine with his lifestyle and his commitment to his work.
In 1917, when he was 32, he was drafted into the US army, and eventually sent to the front in France for a few months. He saw action, and he witnessed people die, though he himself escaped more or less physically unharmed. He was not high-ranking, but his encouragement and support was highly valued by those who served with him.
When he returned home, he almost immediately married his girlfriend Millie, at the beginning of 1919. Ted was 33 and Millie was 25. In 1920 they had a son together, whom they named Henry. Ted loved Henry with all his heart. However, when Henry was 6, he became ill and eventually died, and Ted was devastated. He still feels a hole in his life due to the death of his son. Ted and Millie tried to make things work, but eventually separated. They were finally divorced in 1929.
With the stock market crash, vaudeville suffered greatly. Ted recently moved to Columbia City both to get away from the painful memories, and in hopes of finding work. He was hired as a director and manager at a cabaret/speakeasy. He has some general management duties, though he mostly focuses on working with the performers, whether by finding/casting talent, directing them and being generally in charge of making sure the show is good. On a very rare occasion, he might take to the stage to sing himself.
Plans for your character:
I personally just want to have a good time building character relationships, and eventually exploring the effects of recovering memories, and what effect that will have on him and everyone. I love poking into mysteries.
Ted is focused on two main things a) forging connections in a place he's still relatively new, and b) providing happiness for people in these dark times.
I'd like input on where exactly Ted would be a stage manager, but I'm thinking Lola's Underground would be the easiest. It could also be just somewhere in the theater district, but Ted himself is a drinker so it makes sense it would be a speakeasy. It's also a good way to get him slightly more involved in the criminal scene, which is not something he would naturally gravitate to. I'm also happy to just make up a brand new place.
Inventory:
A medium-sized apartment on the Eastern part of the North Side. Slightly fancy and modern, but a bit impersonal. Has a minibar.
Basic common belongings for a middle-class man. A sewing machine, a typewriter..
Wears mostly three-piece suits.
