Backstory:
Usually, werewolf Ted has the same backstory as canon Ted, up until a few years ago. When his son Henry was 9, Ted was bitten by a werewolf. The next month, he had his first transformation. He's never bit anyone, and he quickly found ways to keep himself safe. His (now ex-)wife knows, and his best friend Beard knows, but that's it for the people in his life in on the secret.
He doesn't know who bit him, but he does know a couple other werewolves who have been helping him adjust, telling him what had happened to him, and teaching him how to live with it and take precautions.
After a year, Ted and Michelle got divorced. Ted blames the wolf for that, even if that wasn't the only thing at work. It's been 2 years since that point. Ted has trouble seeing the wolf as part of himself, and more as something that has showed up to ruin his life, and while he feel sympathy for it and wants to make sure it's safe and cared for, he also remains very bitter towards it.
Biology and transformation:
In human form, Ted heals faster and is a bit stronger, but that's about it as far as differences go. He has a scar on his hip/stomach/thigh that looks like a massive animal bite - on the rare chance someone will see it, he says it was a bear during a camping trip, and doesn't elaborate a lot, saying he doesn't like to talk about it.
Around the days of the full moon, he grows antsy, and has stronger instincts and impulses, intensifying emotions. He'll have more of a temper and be anxious, but can also be more exciteable and hyper.
He transforms three nights each moon cycle, at roughly 8 pm to 6 am - though it's by no means exact, and may vary by several hours. He can feel it coming, and can generally get himself locked up even if it comes early. As the wolf rarely sleeps, Ted is usually exhausted and passes out for several hours once he transforms back.
The transformation takes about 20 seconds, and is fairly horrifying to watch and listen to, as well as painful to experience.
The wolf looks similar to a real wolf, but much bigger. The fur is black and dark brown, and extremely fluffy. It can easily reach the ceiling of an average room with its nose when standing on its hind legs. It also has slightly more dexterous paws than a normal wolf, able to open doors and grab things, though not much more than that.
Wolf personality and memory:
His wolf is very much like a giant, untrained dog. He's clever, and comfortable with humans, and excited to play or even cuddle. He's unlikely to attack or bite, unless threatened or attacked. He may chase someone running away out of instinct, but probably won't intentionally harm them.
He loves attention and gets lonely. He wants to explore and roam, and gets sad and frustrated when confined. When the night draws to a close, he knows to return home to a safe place, and will gets angry or scared if he can't.
He also has very little concept of how humans would like him to behave. He'll easily destroy things and make a mess. While he'll keep to the shadows and avoid attention or crowds, he'd rather follow his desires than make things easy for human Ted.
He does remember people and things from one full moon to another. He sort of remembers things from Ted's life - mostly he knows to trust certain people.
Meanwhile Ted remembers almost nothing from his time as a wolf. He may occasionally get flashes of memory, but that's about it.
Cage and precautions:
Ted lives in a standalone house, where he's converted the entire basement into werewolf containment. There's concrete floors and a drain, and metal-coated walls that have been heavily soundproofed. A heavy metal door opens to the stairs that lead up to a door to the kitchen.
The majority of the basement is the cage itself, but with solid prison bars dividing up a small entrance area of the room, where he keeps some clothes, his phone, a bottle of water, whatever he might need the next morning. There's also a heater to make sure it doesn't get too cold.
The doors can be unlocked with a code, but will also automatically unlock at 9am. The code for the prison bars door is on the outside, so he has to reach through to unlock it, so the wolf won't destroy them. He always checks in with Beard at some point during the day, in case something should go wrong and he gets trapped down there. There's also a security camera that Beard can check the feed of to make sure everything is alright. (Ted almost never watches this footage back, finding it too uncomfortable.)
The inside of the cell contains a few things to make the wolf more comfortable. There's a heavy gym mattress that's warmer and softer to rest on, and is resistant to claws and teeth. There's a tub of water, both for drinking and splashing in. There's an area where Ted always leaves a bunch of raw meat for the wolf to eat. (It's usually calmer after being fed.) There's chew toys and other stuff to play with, though he frequently has to replace those. He generally cleans with a water hose.
It's mostly definitely a dreary and depressing room, though at least it looks more like an animal enclosure than a murder dungeon.
Control and development:
Over time, Ted learns to make the wolf happier and safer, and become more at peace with his condition. While he cannot consciously control the wolf, nor does he clearly remember everything that happens, his wolf form can more or less safely interact with humans now.
By upgrading to an outdoor enclosure, and going through therapy and training (both in human and wolf form), both Ted and the wolf are happier and healthier during the days of the full moon.
